1. How can you initiate, sustain and direct activities in an ICT lesson to motivate students?

During my Year 4 class, i taught the pupils how to import an image and add text using adode photoshop CS3. Initially i showed them an image of a duck that i imported from the internet. From there, i added text to the image. I told the pupils that this is what they are going to do for today’s lesson.

I told them to open the application and teach them the step by step procedure to import an image. Once all the pupils are able to import an image, i proceed to teaching the step by step procedure for adding text to an image using the pen tool. Here i let them play with the font type, font size and colour. Then i asked the pupils if they can move the text another part of the image using a certain tool on the toorbar. Most of the pupils are able to locate the move tool and move the text to another part of the image. I usually go round the class to observe their performance and praise them on their work.

2. How can you help students plan, monitor and modify their cognition to develop self-regulated learning of students in ICT?

During my Year 4 class, I give direct feedback to the pupils. I guide the pupils the step by step procedures on how to import an image and add text to it using the text tool. I go round the class to monitor their progress. If I see only one or two pupils have difficulty then I help them personally and ask them to try and correct their mistakes. If I see that most of the class has difficulty then I repeat the whole procedure step by step again to the class.

Three Clusters of Concerns

Frances Fuller (1969) three clusters of concerns:

·         Self-concerns – ability to teach; class control; discipline

Talking noisily and tattle tailing each other was a big problem in the class. Getting back the pupils attention once they are engrossed in the computer is also a problem. I was able to overcome each problem.

·         Task concerns – teaching tasks such as big classes; inadequate instructional materials

Lack of equipment (computers) so the pupils have to share the PC’s. Time constraints are one of the reasons that I was not able to finish the lesson. That and the pupils inability to navigate the mouse.

·         Impact: learning concerns – needs of pupils; about themselves as individuals, the tasks and contents of the teaching process, and impact of their teaching on pupil behaviours.

As I said the pupils have difficulty in navigating the mouse so thus the lesson was unsuccessful. But all in all they do know what the keyboard and mouse is for.

Lesson Plan Report 1

In terms of the lesson objectives:

IDENTIFY AND NAME THE KEYBOARD AND MOUSE

Pupils were able to identify and name the mouse and keyboard even before the teacher introduces it to them.

IDENTIFY THE FUNCTION OF THE KEYBOARD AND MOUSE

Most pupils are able to identify the function of the keyboard and mouse even before the teacher tells them. Pupils say that the keyboard is used for typing in alphabet and numbers. The pupils say that the mouse is used for “tunjuk-tunjuk” meaning as a pointer. I asked the pupils what else the keyboard is used for. They answered for playing games.

DEMONSTRATE THE SKILLS IN USING KEYBOARD AND MOUSE USING NOTEPAD

DEMONSTRATE THE ABILITY TO SAVE AND RETRIEVE A FILE

DEMONSTRATE THE ABILITY TO OPEN AND CLOSE AN APPLICATION (NOTEPAD)

Pupils are not able to navigate the mouse properly so the above objectives weren’t achieved. They have trouble distinguishing the left click with the right click.
